Close to 300 individuals from Gouyave, and the surrounding communities made their way to the expo at some point throughout the day.

PHSA and the San Jose students took part in health screenings, educational presentations, one-on-one consultations and community engagement. Presentations included women’s health, nutrition, fitness, caregiver’s health and children’s hygiene. The screenings included blood pressure, glucose, breast examinations, and eye and ear examinations. Approximately 100 individuals were filtered through the screening process.

“Being able to serve the community of Gouyave with not only MPH/MD students but the student RNs from San Jose State was an exciting opportunity that I would have never received if it wasn’t for PHSA and SGU,” said Stephanie Johnson, MPH student and PHSA member. “Being able to lead such a diverse team gave me a look into the Global Health Initiatives at its finest – the ground level. Taking this experience into the workforce will allow me to serve other communities at a much deeper level.

With the success of the expo PHSA, the San Jose State University faculty, the Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine at SGU, and the Ministry of Health hope to continue this partnership into the future.
